If you have one or more missing teeth, you will need some method of cosmetic or restorative dentistry to replace the teeth that are gone. We specialize in dental crowns, dental bridges, dentures, dental implants, and full mouth reconstruction. Learn more about what to expect if your dentist recommends a dental implant procedure.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium post that is implanted into the gums and jawbone. It acts as an anchor or support structure for a prosthetic tooth. Dental implants can be used to replace one or more teeth. You may also consider implant-supported dentures if you have multiple missing teeth, or a dental bridge if you have only one missing tooth.

What Happens Before the Procedure

Before your dental implant procedure, Dr. Balaban will perform a full examination of your mouth, gums, and jaw. He will take detailed dental x-rays to confirm you have sufficient jawbone to support a dental implant. He will also take dental impressions of your teeth and gums. He will answer any questions you have about the procedure, and tell you exactly what to expect. He will let you know what medications you can and can’t take in the 24 hours leading up to the procedure, and he will discuss your dental sedation options.

The Dental Implant Procedure

On the day of your dental implant procedure, we will give you a local anesthetic to numb your teeth and gums. Dr. Balaban will make a small incision in your gums and will then use dental instruments to create a small opening in your jawbone. He will insert the dental implant into the jaw and close the incision with stitches.

What to Expect After the Procedure

After the procedure, you may experience pain, swelling, and discomfort. You may be prescribed painkillers, or you can take over the counter painkillers. You should only eat soft foods for at least 72 hours, and avoid exercise or heavy lifting. You should also avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. It may take up to six months for the jawbone to fully heal around the dental implant. Dr. Balaban will determine when it’s appropriate to attach your prosthetic tooth to the implant. He can provide you with a temporary restoration to use in the meantime, if you wish.
